Lyme disease (aka Lyme borreliosis), is a bacterial illness that can be transmitted to humans, dogs, and other animals by certain species of ticks. As April is Prevent Lyme Disease in Dogs Month, it is only fitting to discuss ways to prevent this awful disease from attacking your pup.
Tall grasses, marshes and wooded areas often contain ticks. Be sure to clear shrubbery next to your home and keep your lawn well maintained.
It is important to check yourself and your pup for ticks daily after walks. Some common places ticks hide on dogs are: the feet (and between toes), on lips, around eyes, ears (and inside ears), near the anus, and under the tail.
If you find a tick on your pup, be sure to take care of it immediately. The faster you remove the tick, the less likely your pup will be to contract a disease from their bite. If you do not know the proper way to remove ticks, consult with a veterinarian as dong it wrong can cause more harm than good.
Speak with your veterinarian about getting your dog vaccinated against Lyme Disease. While no vaccine is 100% foolproof, it could offer some protection. Discuss your pet's risk level and lifestyle with your vet to decide if vaccination is right for your pup.
Frequently bathing your pup is important in order to inspect for ticks and wash off any that might have not attached yet. Try our Suds & Soothe Shampoo to make bathing your dog fun and easy.
